It is always rewarding to learn when a fellow sports person has his or her efforts in sport recognised. The honour on this occasion bestowed upon Becky Fortunato.
Although not a competitive swimmer herself, she has put a lot of effort in the re-organisation of GASA and projecting the Association to the maximum away from our shores.
Becky goes back approximately 20 years when as any normal mum used to take her son to swimming lessons at GASA and helping out were needed. This led to taking coaching lessons etc. However, it was not till 1998 when she took over the Presidency of GASA that she began getting a name for herself.
She was instrumental in upgrading to UK ASA the coaching standard of all GASA coaching staff and helpers. She was also instrumental in the extremely close relationship with both FINA and LEN.
Also helping out in coaching, Becky without doubt has a full-time job at GASA. Added to GASA demands, Becky since 1999 is the vice president of the Gibraltar Commonwealth Games Association where she is also kept very busy having attended several conferences and assemblies.
To finish off, since 2001 Becky is also a committee member of the Gibraltar Island Games Association.
I could go on but the MBE bestowed upon her by her Majesty the Queen speaks for itself.
Congratulations and thank you for a job well done.
