The team consisting of Private Liam Conroy, Lance Corporal Chris Gomez and Lance Corporal Ethaniel Mor coached by Corporal Peter Conroy (Liam’s dad), came back with 3 medals to their credit.
Liam won silver in the under 73 kilo class whilst Chris took bronze in the under 81 kilo division. The two Royal Gibraltar Regiment soldiers also claimed the bronze medal in the team event – despite the fact that every team had three 3 competitors! The Gib Regiment’s third member Ethaniel had to unfortunately withdraw from the championships due to injury.
Without doubt Peter Conroy was proud of his 2 competitors. “We have always won medals at these championships “he said, “This year the event attracted over 100competitors so the standard was high.
Both Gibraltar soldiers did well to reach the finals as they each had to win 8 qualifying bouts. “This is only my second championships, “said Chris. “And I only lost to the eventual winner”
“In the team event we won all our bouts and were level on points with 2 other teams”, explained Liam. “But, because there were only 2 of us, the scoreboard showed that our missing third man had forfeited all his bouts, This obviously counting against us and we were subsequently placed 3rd on the count back”.
Chris, Liam and Ethaniel are members of the Budo Kai Club and will be representing Gibraltar at the forthcoming Natwest Island Games to be held in Aland.
